Sue's Tack Shop Newsletter June 2012 Morden Home Hardware

***MY TWO CENTS WORTH***

Oh how I love spring! Horses have shed their winter coats and have not had time to fade from the sun. They seem to look their best in May and early June with their shiny coats. We've sure had our fair share of wood ticks this season. I guess conditions were just right. Hopefully the rain this past week has drowned a few of them. I am fearful that the wet and now the warm days will bring on the mosquito population. Mercydes was very clear what she thought of them the other night when we rode out down the road. There was a lot of neck and head shaking as well as tail swishing going on. I could tell she just wanted to run away from them. I was proud of her that she stayed in the walk without an argument. All was good once we changed direction and they couldn't fly against wind. I got the fly sheets and mask out of storage so she has her mosquito/fly armour ready to do battle.

For a lot of you show season has started. I wish you all the best as you show case your equines in the ring. Keep in mind there may be newbies showing for the first time or mature competitors that are back after taking a hiatus from showing. There may be rules that some folks aren't aware of.  I am sure they would appreciate a heads up from you. Give them a helping hand and friendly smile to welcome them. Competition can be fun if we remember to be good sports and be kind to our fellow competitors.

Trail riding is a great way to enjoy your horse and the company of horse pals. Anything can happen so be prepared.  Let someone know where you are headed and take along a cell phone. If your horse has not been desensitized to it's ring perhaps turn it to vibrate.  Please consider wearing a helmet and encourage your riding partners to wear one too. Helmets are not just for children. After all if a parent has a serious head injury who is going to look after their children. Helmets have come along way, designed for the competitor and the recreational rider. Especially in hot weather a helmet will keep your head cooler than a baseball cap or cowboy hat.  "If you think your heads NOT worth protecting, you're probably right!"

Most of us have got our horses out on pasture now. Founder can hit almost any horse and it can be devastating. To help you remember when it's safe for your horse to be grazing try memorizing this rhyme by Katy Watts.

"The Fructan Jingle"
"When you wake at crack of dawn.
Graze your pony on your lawn.
But sugars rise in afternoon,
For foundered ponies, this spells doom.
When frosts cause fructans to increase.
Your ponies grazing now must cease.
Hold off a day, or maybe more,
Or else your pony may get sore."

portable fendGALLAGHER ALL-IN-ONE PORTABLE FENCE: The SmartFence T4100 is Gallagher's revolutionary new portable fencing system. It is a four-wire, fully-portable, all-in-one electric fence system that can be quickly and easily erected and dismantled by people with no prior temporary fencing experience. The origins of the SmartFence can be traced back to the Swiss Alps. Gallagher’s Swiss team first had the idea of creating a multi-wire fence, similar to a pull-out clothesline, where all the wires unwind at once. Such a simple concept eventually turned into the SmartFence product - an international success story set to redefine the concept of portable fencing. Unlike traditional temporary fencing which uses multiple reels and standards, the SmartFence is easy to carry and store and very simple to put up. Once erected and connected to an energizer, it provides an extremely safe, effective barrier for use in a wide range of situations.
