***MY TWO CENTS WORTH***

August has been a great horse month. There have been lots of successful horse events take place because the weather has been so cooperative. I doubt if any events got cancelled because of rain. Glad that the mosquitoes weren't an issue this summer (I'll gladly put my overstock of Deep Woods Off back in the warehouse for next year) but the down side is that pastures have dried up. This means we will be feeding hay a little earlier unless we get a whole bunch of rain in the next while to rejuvenate the grass. Morden had a wonderful thundershower overnight. This will give our pastures a boost and will settle the dust in the riding ring. This summer I had a little trouble with Mercydes weight ballooning. She's a very easy keeper. We tried keeping them in the corral over night with some hay and that helped. I decided to take the plunge and try a grazing muzzle. This way she could be out with the herd over night but yet limiting her grass intake. It has allowed me to manage her weight much better. It is a little difficult to watch them adapt to wearing it at first. She has managed to rub it off a couple times but for the most part she doesn't get too upset about wearing it. I had to keep in mind that I was doing it for her health. Time of year is upon us when those nasty bott flies start laying their eggs on our horses. Check out their front legs and chest for these yellow spots...these are bott eggs. The bott fly knows just where to lay them to get your horse to ingest them. Clean them off with a bott egg knife or groomer's stone (see new items listed below). This fall be sure to use a dewormer that has ivermectin, it is known to kill bott egg larvae.

Time to get your hay supply for the 7 months of the year that we can't rely on pasture. In fact you may be needing to supplement your horse's diet now with pastures getting depleted. Take the time to properly stack and store your hay. Consider getting some wooden pallets to place under your bottom bales. Invest in a heavy duty tarp that will withstand the wind and keep the rain and snow from damaging the stack. Check out the classified ads below for hay for sale.

I plan on being at Bird's Hill Park the weekend of September 9 & 10. If you are from that area or will be attending the Dressage Winnipeg show I can bring your orders with me.
