***MY TWO CENTS WORTH***

Wow July was a scorcher! Heat can create challenges in looking after our equines. Horses can easily triple their water intake during heat waves. It is extremely important for them to have lots of "clean" water to drink. I emphasize clean because horses won't drink as much from grungy algae water. With so much sunshine can create quite an algae bloom in your water tank. Get yourself a little wet, you might enjoy the coolness, and scrub out that tub a couple times during the summer. Horses, like humans, can do serious damage to their organs if they can't get their internal temperature down. Check out the article below "Turn Down the Heat" it has some real common sense tips for taking care of your horse in the heat. Also be sure to have a free choice salt block or loose salt available for them as they are loosing a lot when sweating and it encourages them to drink. Please don't have the attitude that "they're are animals...they'll be fine". You are your horse's advocate, take the time to ensure their safe health! Speaking of horse health. My mare, Mercydes and the two year old filly in our herd have been drooling. I'd bring Mercydes in the barn to tack up and before long there would be a puddle on the floor in front of her. After doing some research online we think we have found the root of the problem. The culprit is clover. As with humans horses have favorite foods, obviously these two horses really love the clover. It seems that in certain conditions the clover develops a fungus and it this is what some horses react to. Since they are loosing a lot of their saliva be especially vigilant that they have access to water or they can become dehydrated. Of course it is wise to move them off that pasture and even feed hay if necessary. We have since moved them down to the lower pasture where there is less clover and the drooling has stopped.

In July I enjoyed 3 days of dressage as an associate camper at Dressage Winnipeg's adult dressage camp. It was hosted by DW but open to non members, we had many non members join in the fun. Thanks to organizers Megan Nunn and Sandra Hobday for putting together a great event. I enjoyed the company of like minded dressage enthusiasts. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and loved watching others ride and learn. I think the best part was cheering on my pal Lois. It was her first time at something like this and her "cow pony" Joe was a dressage star. She's a great rider so I wasn't surprised at how well they did. They even did their first dressage test on the last day with some great marks. My horse plans for August are to take in as much as I can of the Canadian National Arabian Show aka "Royal Red". It is being held in Brandon this year, previously held in Regina for as long as I can remember. This is quite a "feather in the cap" fo r the city of Brandon. I hope the city pulls out all the stops on this one in hopes of keeping this huge celebration of the Arabian horse coming back to Manitoba. This event takes place August 15-20, hope to see you there. http://www.arabianhorses.org/competitions/nationalevents/canadiannationals/2011/ also check out the Keystone Centre's website. http://www.keystonecentre.com/keystonedetail.asp?id=35 There is another Eddo Hoekstra clinic at the end of August that I would like to audit. He's become a very popular dressage clinician in Manitoba and quite a few of my dressage buddies are riding in it. Hoekstra Dressage For information on this clinic contact Susana Danyliuk at 204-466-2620. Susana she has no email in the summer months so please call her. I am hoping to get some trail riding in this month as well. Some friends are at Spruce Woods this week and if I can swing it I'd like to get out there to join them even if it's only for one day.
The article below is by Roz Moskovits. I met Roz two years when she was my dressage coach while at dressage camp.We reconnected this July while I was auditing at dressage camp. I really enjoyed our chats and have a lot of respect for her.

"WHY DO I RIDE?"
Guest column by Roz Moskovits

So often as riders we find ourselves asking "how do I ride... better, more effectively, more competitively, more correctly ...", but rarely do we ask the question, "Why do I ride?"
The "why" is your driving force behind your decisions... the decisions we make every day. Decisions like what tack or equipment to buy, what system of training we choose, which professionals we work with, and even which horse we spend our time with. There really are only three reasons why we ride: #1 - our love of horses. #2 - the technical skill development. #3 - competitive success. Quite honestly, most of us are a combination of the three. Typically, people are drawn to horses because of #1, often stay and grow with the sport because of #2, and then advance through the sport because of #3. The reality is often when riders reach the competitive stage they also become interested in the business side of the industry as breeders, trainers or coaches. This is so often the area of the industry that feeds us our professionals. As an amateur, you will likely at some point in time seek out advice, training or coaching from a professional. The point of view of this profess ional will typically be coming from the competitive side of the industry as that is where their driving force is the strongest. However, you need to listen to your own driving force in making your final decision. As an example, you may find yourself in a situation where you are working with a horse that may very well be an enjoyable animal to be around, a horse that you trust and look forward to riding each day. Your coach may see that this horse lacks skills to be competitive in the show ring and suggests you replace this animal with a more suitable show quality horse. If your driving force is #1, a love of horses, then changing your ride would be the wrong decision. If your driving force is #2 then the best decision for you may be to go as far as you possibly can on this horse to improve your technical abilities, knowing that you will replace the horse within a few years. And, if your driving force is #3 then by all means, get the right horse for the job and don't waste an y time doing it! Take a moment to think about why YOU ride. You will soon see that some of the difficult decisions we often need to make or are convinced by others to make are much clearer when we are true to our driving force. Good luck, and enjoy your ride for your own reasons!

At the last minute before publishing I got an email forwarded from a friend on helmet safety. Thank you Lori Versavel for sending this to me this so I can share it with my readers. I am huge advocates for helmet use at all times. I stole my motto from a video I watched many years ago titled "Every Time, Every Ride". I constantly nag my non-helmet wearing friends to put on a helmet. I hope they are reading this...and I also hope that Jessica Jahiel doesn't mind me copying her information.
"Dear HORSE-SENSE readers, as all of you know, I am always and forever on the side of rider education and of rider brain protection in the form of equestrian helmets. Those of you who follow dressage will already know of Courtney King-Dye, an elegant young (33) rider who has been highly successful in competitive dressage with a number of different horses. Courtney has represented the USA at the World Cup and at the Olympic Games. You have probably seen some images of her; she has been featured in many magazine articles and has served as a demonstration rider for many world-famous clinicians. And now I will get to the point of this story. About sixteen months ago, Courtney was involved in a riding accident when the young horse she was riding tripped (that's TRIPPED - he was not bucking, rearing, bolting, or misbehaving in ANY way, he just TRIPPED) and fell. Courtney was not wearing her helmet. She suffered a TBI (traumatic brain injury). Cour tney was in a coma for a month and spent the following three months as an inpatient in a rehab unit - she had to re-learn some very basic skills such as walking and talking. Now, sixteen months after the accident, she is at home but still receiving a great deal of therapy. Even though she can do very few things on her own and has difficulty talking, she is working hard and hoping to return to competitive riding some day. Traumatic brain injuries happen. They happen more often and with much greater severity when riders leave their helmets at home, even if they (like Courtney) "usually" wear their helmets, and even if (like Courtney) they are extremely skilled riders, and even if the horses they are riding (like Courtney's horse) are lovely, kind, obedient, perfectly-well-behaved animals. The best and kindest horses can trip; the most skilled and talented humans can fall; human brains are delicate; helmets can protect them. I can't force anyone to wear a helmet, but I can explain why it matters. I can offer the HORSE-SENSE page TRUE HELMET STORIES http://www.horse-sense.org/stories/. Now, I can also share with all of you a link to a plea for riders to wear helmets. The person making that plea is Courtney King-Dye. Her brain is obviously injured; her heart and courage are undiminished. I'm sure that it required an enormous amount of courage for her to make this video. Please watch it and consider what she's saying - and how hard she is working to say it. She made a mistake - one that many of us have made on more than one occasion - and the price she's paying is very, very high. Right now she is looking forward to competing in Para-Dressage, once she has re-learned how to trot on her own. THINK ABOUT THIS.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awJDYBhBPzk. If this gives you some added respect for the concept of riders wearing helmets, consider making yourself into the helmet-wearing role model for the other riders and potential riders in your life: People at your barn, members of your family, friends who share your interests. If you're a professional in the horse industry, consider the fact that you are also a role model for your students, and your staff. Encourage them all to watch this video. Working together, Courtney and you might save the life, or the quality of life, of someone you know. Thank you. Jessica Jahiel."
