EDITORIAL CONTENT (MY TWO CENTS WORTH)
March turned out to be a pretty good
horse month for me. To start things off
I moved my Arab mare, Mercydes, to Abe
Friesen's at St. Claude so I could ride
in his indoor arena. I'll keep her there
until later in April. It's a bit of a
drive but this way I know I can ride no
matter what the weather and the footing
is always good. Mercydes and I have come
a long way. We are trying to get a
relaxed, cadenced canter right now. What
is special about my relationship with
Mercydes is that we are having fun and I
feel completely safe on her. In the
middle of March Murray and I drove down
to New Braunfels, Texas. He got in lots
of golf and I did some riding. I
contacted a dressage gal down there.
Catherine arranged a mount for me and we
went for a ride through a cattle ranch.
I kept looking down at the prickly pear
cactus and thinking I do not want to
fall off here! Fortunately for me my
little QH gelding was a very safe
mount. Over the next couple days I took
some western lessons at the stable where
Catherine boards. I really sucked at the
one handed riding, but I did manage to
improve. That horn really gets in the
way! I had a big bruise come up on my
right wrist, guessing I kept bumping it.
The snow has quickly melted this past
weekend we're all anxious to get on our
horses. It's always a good idea to do
some groundwork in the spring to remind
your horse of your relationship. Their
spring fever can take some managing. Be
careful not to over do it as your
horse is not in physical shape. Start
off slow and build as you both get
fitter. They easily over heat in the
spring until they are shed out. Keep
that in mind and be sure to cool
them off after you ride.
**SECRET
DEALS** Quite often I
get sweet offers from some of my
suppliers that require a quick
turnaround. I never know what is going
to come my way. I recently published a
secret deal featuring horse
clippers. Sometimes there are monthly or
weekly specials that suppliers offer or
they are clearing out inventory. Some
months there are one or two deals; some
months up to 5 or 6. I pass on these hot
deals to my "Secret Deals" subscribers
as I get them. If you'd like to be
on my "Secret Deals" list just let me
know at
suestackshop@mts.net. You
will need high speed internet service as
these emails have pictures embedded in
them.

HORSES 3 -
HEAD*HEART*HOOVES*: April
16,17, 18. The Keystone Centre in
Brandon, MB is excited to once again
host this event, now in it's 3rd year.
Manitoba’s largest equine educational
event. Our goal is to provide the horse
enthusiast the opportunity to learn more
about communicating with their horse.
Variety of clinics available to view:
Horsemanship, Barrel Racing, Dressage,
Reining, Western Pleasure, and Show
Jumping. Also featuring lectures on
Equine Health, Hoof Care, Dental, Saddle
Fitting, and Riding as One. The most
attended event is the Naeric Trainer’s
Challenge. This is where three
clinicians take a young horse out of a
supplied select herd and individually
call upon the depths of their knowledge,
abilities and skill to see how much of
an understanding they can develop
between horse and human. From this
foundation, you will see how much is
possible to accomplish with four 1 hour
sessions in the round pen. Sunday join
us for the excitement where this year's
trainer will be crowned H3 Trainer
Champion. Visit our website
www.keystonecentre.com

MUSICAL
FREESTYLE DRESSAGE CLINIC:
Karen Robinson of Applause Dressage
is the featured clinician. April 23 thru
25. The Bosma Family from Oakwood
Stables have kindly agreed to host. The
kur (individual musical freestyle) is a
relative newcomer in the otherwise
historic discipline of dressage. In
order to encourage more dressage riders
to take part in this exciting but
demanding element of our sport, Dressage
Winnipeg is holding this clinic aimed at
those riders who are thinking of
producing a freestyle for the coming
show season and who might like a little
help with choreography and music. Day
#1: Three-hour seminar which is open to
riders and non riding participants,
encompasses how to determine the tempo
of each gait, search for music, start
the choreography, and much more. This
session is appropriate for all levels,
and is supported by audio and video
examples. Each participant receives a
packet of printed information to take
home. Day #2: Application: Mounted
sessions accommodate riders from First
Level to Grand Prix in time slots of 45
minutes each. Participants receive a
tempo analysis, learn to ride to the
beat of the music, and receive
choreography appropriate for their
level. Day #3: Further Application and
Polish: 45 minute private session for
each rider to practice further and iron
out wrinkles. Clinic fee: $355./mounted,
$75/unmounted. Cheques should be made
payable to Dressage Winnipeg. Maximum
riders is 10, maximum unmounted
participants is 20. Criteria for riding
participants: We would like to have
riders from most levels, lowest level a
freestyle can be ridden is first level.
Riders ideally should have competed at
1st level or higher, or at least be
training consistently at 1st level. Non
riding participants may choose whether
they observe from the actual arena or
the heated viewing room. All
participants should bring a folding or
lawn chair for the Friday evening
session. Straw bales will provide the
seating in the arena for the remainder
of the weekend. Lunch break is only 45
minutes, either bring your own lunch or
participate in the $5/pizza service.
Complementary coffee will be available
at breaks. Please email Melissa Bosma
melissabosma77@hotmail.com
to register.
