There were some days in December when the weather was pretty nasty and cold. Thank goodness we had a short reprieve from the cold snap in December so we could enjoy some time outdoors with our equine partners. Mercydes wore her warm winter blanket during the cold spell and faired well. She wore it for about 10 days straight; we took the blanket off on the 17th and found she had gained quite a few pounds through the cold spell. Shelley had made sure she had lots of hay burning in her gut to keep her internal temperature up. At Christmas our area of the province got hit with a ton of snow. Mercydes and her herd mates insisted on parking themselves right behind the barn where the snow swirls off the roof and they got covered in snow. They had to be defrosted, dried, and blanketed and were then locked in a small paddock so they couldn't repeat the performance. We had hoped to trailer to a neighboring indoor arena to ride sometime between Christmas and New Year but with this much snow it just wasn't feasible. Even though I am not getting in my "horse time" I am confident that Mercydes is being well cared for at Shelley's. Shelley is sending me pictures to keep happy. I also watch the video of my lesson I had with Peter H. at the end of November to keep my horse longing fulfilled. One other thing I do to get me through the winter is watch my Jane Savoie Happy Horse DVDs. I can't say enough about this teaching tool. It's great for me as I am not close enough to get regular coaching. Hoping for milder weather in January so we can play outside or venture to an indoor arena to ride.  I hope all of you with indoor arenas are grateful for what you have. There are a lot of us who are very envious!
