SUE'S TACK SHOP NEWSLETTER JUNE 2009- MORDEN HOME HARDWARE

EDITORIAL CONTENT (MY TWO CENTS WORTH)

Finally May has brought some riding weather! Although it was still on the cooler side, which is fine with me since I am not fond of hot temperatures. I brought Frisko home to Lois's place at the beginning of May. He is slowly getting settled into his new home. He attached himself to Gem the older mare of the herd...and I mean glued himself to her. He was quite dominant with her; I think she found his 16.3 hh frame rather intimidating. His love affair with her affected our relationship. He would rather be in the pasture with the mare than anywhere else. That created some issues like standing to be mounted and in general it made for an anxious horse when he was separated. I had to take the focus off riding and put the focus back on horse behavior. Late last week Lois moved Gem to the upper pasture with another mare and new foal. Frisko was devastated and showed his disapproval by going on a hunger strike! He would pace the fence or just stand and mope, gazing longingly for her.  He finally started to graze normally yesterday. The mare is very happy to be rid of her maniac boyfriend. I had to cancel at the last minute for the Westman Cadora dressage schooling show at the end of May. Frisko developed a cough, just in trot and canter work not at rest. After having the vet check him out we think it was a dust/pollen sensitivity or the other possibility was a feed allergy.  It was right at the time when the trees where budding and we had a lot of wind. I took him off all his extra feed and supplements until we can figure out what was the cause. He has improved greatly this last week, no cough at all yesterday when I worked him.

June looks like a good riding month. I am anxious to get back to some regular lessons. I need some regular time in the saddle to get my riding muscles in shape. Right now I fatigue so quickly because I just don't have the strength. No one to blame but myself for being too "relaxed" at home. Horse competition season is in full swing. Go out there and show off your horses!  If you have events that need some publicity email the information to me. I'd be happy to include them in the News from the Region.

This weekend I had a friend who lost a mare very dear to her. She now has a two week orphaned foal. She really needs a nurse mare to help care for the foal. If anyone can help please contact Janet oakhaven@goinet.ca, 204-834-2544. Carberry.

We can apply a bonding to strengthen the exterior of the hoof while the new hoof grows, but this will not cure the problem. Healing has to be done from the inside. Protein, not Biotin, is the primary constituent of the structural, and protective tissues of the hoof. The role of Biotin is to help break down the protein (amino acids) for faster action. This is why we have mega doses of protein with a few milligrams of Biotin in Hoof Health. The faster the amino acids work, the quicker the hoof heals.  Contains D-biotin, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and amino acids.  Pellets.  5.4 kg-Retail $65.99...JUNE SALE $49.99!!! http://www.mordenhomehardware.ca/SuesTackShop/HorseHealth/data.html
